To My Wife on Valentine’s Day

(A Barbara Streisand record plays on the turntable. Her voice is as crisp and sweet as ever. For thirty years the stylus runs over the vinyl. Scratching sound can be heard.)

(Champagne, roses and chocolate. It is that time of the year. We have spent Valentines Day for thirty springs. The sound of love is still crisp and sweet but scratches can be found in our relationship.)

(There will be bitterness while enjoying the aroma of champagne and the sweetness of chocolate. The pleasure for the view of a rose in the vase comes after the pain inflicted by the thorn.)

(We have come a long way holding hands. You always face the future with enthusiasm and vitality. I constantly look back to the past generation seeking for the truth. Different rhythm in our steps creates different pace.)

(There is no other to fool us in between. The children are no obstacle. Love is as beautiful as a budding rose. Children are the petals that blossom and then carried away by the wind, leaving us behind like the dried stalk.)

(Do not look for love in the dried stalk. Its essence has been turned into honey.)
